TRIUMPH FOR JAUME GUARDEÑO DE CAJA RURAL-ALEA EN LA BIDASOA ITZULIA 2023
The objective was clear from the beginning. Taking the general victory for Caja Rural-Alea. With a relay work executed to perfection, Jaume Guardeño achieved his first general and crowned the team as champion in Bidasoa Itzulia 2023.
After having made a very good participation in the previous stages of the Bidasoa, everything indicated that the team was going for first place. All the members were prepared and mentalized, with a good placement and teamwork, they could achieve it.
With Guardeño and Arriolabengoa in their positions, they managed to create a getaway in which Samuel, Hugo and Jaume marched. Behind Arriola was waiting, in case the options of the break declined.
The relay work they did went off without a hitch, taking Jaume into the decisive section of the stage. It was at this moment that it only depended on him to go head-to-head with his rivals and have a chance of victory.
He resisted all the attacks launched and managed to arrive with options to win the stage, but the objective was the general.
Sliding away on a getaway that the rivals could not stop, he took third place on the final stage and managed to take the overall, bringing the team his eighth success and his first.
Jaume Guardeno: "The race has been very fast from the beginning, Samu, Hugo and I have been there to get into the first break of the day and they both have done a great job to maintain the differences with the peloton. In the end I had the strength to withstand the attack from Carrascosa to keep me with options until the end. Going down the last climb I collaborated giving relays and I was able to finish off the overall sprint. I had been feeling well for several weeks now, but unfortunately I had not been able to show my potential. Luckily the time has come for both for me as well as for the team, who deserved it. This victory changes my perspective, it gives me a lot of motivation to prepare for the next races".
